My name is Leilani Shoffner and I am an eight-year veteran of the United States Air Force. I did not plan to become a Licensed Optical right after my tour was up. In fact, I took a year off working as a contractor at the same job as I did in the military and was focused on the possibilities of rejoining as an officer in either the Air Force or Army. It wasn’t until I was hired as a lab tech and dispensing optician in LaGrange Georgia; however, not for my experience because I knew nothing about optics, but there was an opening so I took the opportunity. I knew this was my career field after dispensing to a six-year-old girl who had never worn glasses before. Her wide-eyed glare, shocking expression, amazing smile and huge, huge hug (due to her new-found sight) was all I needed to turn my career goals towards being an optician. One year later I saved, sold my car, moved across Florida to live with family to on my educational pathway. Three and a half years later (from that point) I not only took the officer test and passed, but I earned my Opticianry, Optical Management, and Business degrees. Even with passing up the chance to go back in to military, I have never looked back at choosing to be as a licensed Optician and have never been happier with my career choice!
